New Feature: Public Files

It's been a while since we released a new feature to our users. This isn't because we haven't been working hard, trust me. It's because we've been working hard on infrastructure type stuff, making the web site run more smoothly.

However, this weekend I set out to make a change that a lot of users have been requesting: public files.

Now, when you log in to your Openomy account, you'll be able to mark a file as public and give it a permalink. This only applies to files which you are the owner of (i.e. files which you uploaded). These links are really nice and clean, too. They're of the form: http://www.openomy.com/download/{username}/{filename}

By default, files are still private. You can make them public at any time, and also make them private again at any time. The choice is completely yours.

Fair Warning: This feature is totally free to use right now. Consider this a testing stage, however. Likely, we'll keep it free forever (that's the goal), but we can't guarantee that. If our bandwidth spikes, or the costs simply become too prohibitive, we may have to limit bandwidth or perhaps make this a premium feature. For now, though, feel free to use it at your will.
