Openomy is closing down March 24, 2009

Today we are announcing that in 10 days -- March 24, 2009 -- Openomy will be closing down.

This is obviously a bittersweet post for me to write, but we are moving on to new things and it's the right time to do so. The idea for Openomy is almost 4 years old and the site has been live for three and a half years, happily storing your files each day. I could not be happier to have helped over 65,000 people store and share hundreds of thousands of files safely and easily for the past few years, but that time has come to an end.

In the next 10 days, please download all files you need to keep as after that time you will be unable to do so. We will be turning off registration for new users today as well as removing the ability to upload new files. We will remain for the next 10 days strictly to allow you to export your data.

Lastly, we know that this might mean you'll need a new place to upload files, and I want to extend my recommendations for both box.net and Dropbox.

Thanks again for your support and we love you all.

I'm trying to download my files, but I'm getting 502 errors every time. I'm sorry you're closing, but please let me get my files!

It would also be super nice if there was a way to give us a "Download All" button, but I understand you're probably not going to want to do any last minute development.

I know this happened a fair bit ago, but I never really voiced my intense displeasure at how this announcement was communicated. There was no email warning to users... I only found out once the links to my files no longer worked, and by then of course it was too late.

I lost multiple files that I cherished due to this. The point of such a service is to prevent such a loss. Do you really think your "65,000 users" moved their "hundreds of thousands" of files off your overloaded service in the allotted ten days? From the other comments here, I doubt it.

The lack of respect given to your (former) users as you closed this site was unbelievable given that all you were doing was moving to 'greener' pastures (hello iPhone) and pursuing the development of other websites. The closure could have been spread across a month, could have been actually propagated to your users, etc etc. What a blatantly cynical move.

Good luck with AppStoreHQ.

Wow.

You closed it in March 2009 - and I'm hearing about this now? (It's January 2010 as I write). Why didn't you email me?

It's a good thing I backed up my files on my local disk, just to be safe - which defeats the whole purpose of having them online in the first place, as then I have to synch them up all the time.

The Internet really cannot be trusted with important stuff - especially not Openomy.
